SMTP Redirection Service

What is SMTP Redirection and why might I need it?

SMTP Mail Redirection allows you to relay inbound mail for your domain to a non-standard port on your mail server. Many ISPs block port 25, which is the default port for the SMTP service, therefore you cannot run a mail server to accept mail (as mail is delivered on port 25). Our service will accept your mail on port 25 and deliver it to the port of your choosing at an address of your choosing. This service is designed for those who want to run a mail server but have an ISP that blocks inbound port 25. All email sent on the Internet is routed through port 25 (with the exception of SMTP redirection services), so it is not possible to receive email from outside your LAN if your ISP blocks port 25.

 

How does SMTP Redirection work?

Using WilcoIT for SMTP Redirection, you will make our mail server the domain's primary mail exchanger, which stores and forwards emails for your domain. We leverage our access to port 25, so mail delivery services can access our servers without a problem. We will accept this email on behalf of your domain and forward the email to your inbound mail server, which you've setup on a port which your ISP does not block.

 

Why do ISP's block SMTP?

Many ISPs have started blocking SMTP (port 25) in order to stop spamming and to stop variants of internet worms designed to send spam from infected computers. The unfortunate result means that users no longer have the ability to use their own mail servers to accept and receive mail. Our service is NOT meant for circumventing the Terms of Service for your ISP, please ensure that you remain in good standing with your ISP. Our service is also not a means to spam or spread Internet worms, it allows for the legitimate use of your own mail server. We have a very strict anti-spam policy and we also verify that your mail server is not a known source of spam or your server is configured as an open relay before activating your account. Our service is meant to help you keep your privately managed mail server receiving mail for your domain in a responsible manner.

 

Will this increase spam?

Absolutely not. All of the casual spammers and worms are still blocked by the ISP's restriction on port 25.
